Bases and Alkali Flashcards
What is an acid
A substance containing hydrogen that dissociates in water to create H+
What is an alkali
A base that dissolves in water to release OH- ion
What is a base
A substance that reacts with an acid to create a salt and water. A proton (H+) acceptor
What is the general formula for metal reacting with oxygen
Metal + oxygen —> metal oxide
What is the general formula for metal hydroxide reacting with acid
Metal oxide + water —> metal hydroxide
What is the general formula for metal hydroxide reacting with acid
Metal hydroxide + acid —> salt + water
What is the equation of metal oxide reacting with acid? What is the ionic equation?
(Like calcium)
CaO (s) + H2SO4 (aq) → CaSO4 (aq)+ H2O (l)
O2- +H+ →H2O
What is the equation of metal hydroxide reacting with acids?
(example magnesium)
Mg(OH)2 (s) + 2HCl(aq) → MgCl2 (aq) + H2O(l)
OH- (aq) + H+ (aq) → H2O (l)
How does calcium hydroxide
neutralise acidic e
Ca(OH)2 (s)+ H2SO4 (aq) → CaSO4 (aq)+ H2O (l)
What are the 3 acids you need to know? And what are their formulas
Hydrochloric, Nitric and Sulfuric HCl, HNO3 and H2SO4
What salt is produced with Hydrochloric acid
Chloride
What salt is produced with Sulfuric acid
Sulfate
What salt is produced with nitric acid
Nitrate
