12: Emporda, Costers del Segre, Pla de Bages, Alella, Cava, Penedes (Cava) , Conca de Barbera, Tarragona, Montsant, Terra Alta and Priorat, (a DOCa ). The Catalonia DO, is a catch-all DO that encompasses all regions the entire area, including the other 11 DO.

What type of soil is the Priorat DOCa known for?

Priorat is known for its llicorella soils of flat, easily breakable stones made of decomposed slate flecked with mica and other minerals.

Garnacha, but Cariñena is almost as prominent. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah are also listed among the allowed varieties.
