Mao Zedong
The son of a well-to-do peasant, Mao, more than any other individual, personified the Chinese Communist Party,which he helped found in 1921 and led until his death in 1976.
Century of Humiliation
A period b/w mid 19th & 20th cent. during which China suffered repeated military defeats from a number of European colonial powers and Japan, which resulted in several foreign “spheres of influence” on chinese soil

a system of social accounting whereby extended families undertook the responsibilities of preparing its members to serve society and state as a whole, and in which entire families were held accountable for individual transgressions of its members

Mobilization of Chinese seeking to increase China’s wealth and stature on the world stage. Students and intellectuals and others filled Tianemen Square to protest the ceding to Japan after WWI
People’s Republic of China
A result of civil war b/w communist and nationalists (losers). Current regimes of china

Gained lots of support from victories, economic improvments, and international perceptions
hundred flowers movement
A short-lived movement in which Mao offered chinese citizens a channel to articulate grievances. NOt approved
Anti-Rightist campaign
Response to HFM. Rightist criticized communist regime (they were forced out of jobs and placed in prison)

Mao’s attempt to transform China into and agrarian exporting powerhouse. Led to famine
