Case StudyTutorial L4 BioChem Flashcards
What cellular processes may be involved in Michelle’s case
ATP production for cellular energy, Glyccolysis occuring in the cytosol, Acetyl CoA, Krebs Cycle and also the electron transport chain.
ATP is crucial for energy production. Look at Bvits and Mg, crucial for energy
What is Canderel and how might this be affecting Michelle’s health?
Pity this was advised because artifical sweetener has a greater impact on cellular energy. The chemical can interfere with metabolism and CELLULAR RESPIRATION.
Look at the ingredients in the artificial sweeteners (multidextron, aspartame, flavourings) we need to say Aspartame is a known neurotoxin, can affect mood, depression, can induce systemic stress, oxidation, cause inflammation. It may damage cell membranes.
For Michelle, we need to make sure cell membranes are selective and not damaged, otherwise the cells wont work at their optimum. Omega 3 will help with membrane.
She doesnt need them, remove them. Also psychological impact on insulin affecting that side of things, brain registers the sweet flavour, super sweet sweeteners drives the crave for sugar, so bear in mind for client.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Clock: What organ systems seem out of balance in this case? How might you explain this to her
Circadium rhythm. Important with each lecture that we are building knowledge (history L1) happens at nighttime 10.30pm, indicating adrenal fatigue, endocrine imbalance so we know this is what she is experienced. Cortisol fluctuations with chronic fatigue, it should be raising around 6am, they notice it’s high at night time. Melatonin should be taking over but the cortisol is too high and keeps people awake.
She tosses and turns from 10.30-3am. 11-1 is gallbladder and 2-3 is detoxifying. look at the biliary system. Diet used to be poor. Dad has chyrrosis of liver ( a clue but not a fact) so is there a genetic lean.
If people wake unrefreshed, could be liver is sluggish and needs support.
What is the quality of protein Michelle is having in her diet, and how can this be improved.
Soy products, texted vegetarian comes from sausages, nuggets, not good health basd. Swap those out . alot of additive, damaged fats to give a mouth feel/meaty feel, alot of salt in there. 100% manufactured.
Very little at breakfast (carb based currently) get good fat and good protein for sustained energy for the day.
Handout how to balance with complete proteins, good wholegrains, beans and legumes.
Cook from scratch. homemade bean burgers and batch cook wrapped in greaseproof/beexwax wraps. Lentil bake and lentil loaves, veg stews, tempeh and miso, healthier options in freezer. Homemade baked beans in freezer. Tahini, nutbutter, nutrient dense. Swap out so every time asking to avoid something, help with alternative.
Name 3 foods that may help Michelle increase her glutathione production.
legumes sunflower seeds and eggs. Selenium rich foods such as brazil nuts, eggs, garlic, onion, leaks, cruciferous veg. also oily fish and green leafy veg
Name 2 culinary herbs/spices that you might recommend for her pain and inflammation. Explain why.
We know ginger and tumeric help reduce inflammation in COX and LOX enzymes, those key inflammatory mediators. Circumin, ginger, boswelia . Always add black pepper (pipperine). Dietary health fats so best of circumin is absorbed. Add to carrots, have boiled eggs, bunch of green or lovely mushrooms (great for gut health with betaglucans)
Name 1 mineral you would ask Michelle to boost through dietary changes, and research 5 best bood sources of this nutrient.
Magnesium for ATP production
dark green leafy veg, chlorella, nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, avocado, wheatgrass. Give recipe for green smoothie, swap it out for poached egg. Have a green bowl of rocket, drizzled with ACV and olive oil just before meals.
Batch cook, lentil bean stews, have nut butter on oatcakes.
Apart from VitB5, name 2 other B Vitamins which would be beneficial for Michelle, and state why
Have a complex Bvits, high dose to help fatigue.
B2 for NAD
B3 for FAD helping with energy production
Which foods would you suggest she have to support Michelle’s digestive function
Bitter greens, pineapple, papaya, kiwi, sprouts, garlic and not drinking fluids with meals. ACV prior to meal.
Name 2 herbs that may support mitochondrial function?
Adaptogenic herbs, ginseng, astragalis, ginghko, rhodiola, rosemary, circumin. tumeric.
Cleansing blood removing incumbant materials. these could include burdock, dandelion. Nettle is fantastic, mineral rich.
