CASE STUDY- Ulla-Forre dam Flashcards
what is the annual production of energy of Ulla Forre dam complex?
4.5 terrawatt hours
how is it possible that Ulla Forre can produce so much energy?
Because the Blasjo reservoir is 1000m above sea level and the generating stations are much lower which creates large potential energy
how much water can Blasjo reservoir hold?
3.1 billion tonnes of water
why is the water supply of the reservoir sustainable?
Ulla-forre has high annual rainfall (2000mm per year) therefore water is a non critical renewable energy resource in the area
what is good about the reservoirs location?
- 250km from Oslo, 125km fro Bergen and 100km from Stavanger (three of the biggest cities in Norway) so little energy is lost over these short distances
- Located on a uninhabited plateau at 1000m above sea level so it meant no one was affected by its construction
how has the natural environment been looked after in the construction of the HEP dam?
Salmon ladders have been built allowing salmon migrations to continue which its good for the tourist industry aswell
what has the low operating costs meant for electricity prices?
Fallen sharply- in Oslo electricity prices have dropped by half
