CASE STUDY- Norways overall energy strategy Flashcards
what is the annual total energy consumption of Norway and what is the EU average?
Norway:6.2 tons of oil per person
EU: 3.8 tons
what place is Norway ranked as for electricity consumption per person and why is this?
1st-It is a very rich country (GDP per person $55000) so can afford to spend alot on energy
-Cold country with long, dark winters so alot of electricity consumption goes to heating and lighting
what does Norway do with its large reserves of oil and gas?
Exports it to countrys such as Germany and uses the money to invest in renewables
how much of the countries electricity is generated by HEP?
99%
what percent of ENERGY comes from fossil fuels and how much from renewables?
39% fossil fuels - mostly used for transport
61% renewables
where is it ranked in Europe as a producer of HEP?
1st
why is norway got the ideal conditions for HEP production?
- Has lots of natural lakes so less environmentally damaging than creating artificial reservoirs
- High annual rainfall
why is Norway now looking to diversify away from HEP production?
All potential HEP sites have now been exploited so it is looking into other renewable sources of energy
give an example of a scheme to increase renewable energy reliance in Norway?
In 2006 they spent $3billion on renewable energy. One of the main aims was to triple wind power capacity
how else is norway looking to produce more renewable energy?
Want to make solar panels more efficient by increasing the energy harnessed from the sun from 17% to 50%
why could norway be suited to solar panel energy?
in summer they have 24 hours a day of sunlight
how is Norway trying to reduce energy consumption?
Taxation: increasing the price of energy to encourage people to use less
Encouraging conservation: Ensuring that all new buildings are energy efficient eg triple glazing and turning off lights when not in use
Is Norways energy strategy sustainable?
- Doesn’t need to worry about energy security in the short term, allowing it to focus on the long term
- Still relies on fossil fuels for transport
