- public transport meant people could live further from their place of work
- the city spread outward as sub-urban houses were built in places like Ely and Lisvane
- these places were now part of the urban area of Cardiff

-on the sides of the main roads, there is inter-war housing

-behind the main roads are modern houses usually with gardens and garages
What are some of the characteristics of the rural/urban fringe?
-farmland, forestry, golf courses, airports and out-of-town shopping centres
