Case Study - Newyork Flashcards
How many people live in New York + percentage of immigrants
8.36 million people live in NYC
37% of NYC is immigrants
44% I’d the labour force are immigrants ( highest in US )
After 1980 New York reurbanised as people moved back to the city. Why?
- Knowledge economy created employment
- Regeneration and closure of the docks which were then converted to apartments and offices
- City became safer as a zero tolerance towards crime was introduced
Between 1950 and 1980 New York lost 12% of its population. Why do you think this happened?
Wealthy white 2nd Generation migrants left so businesses and taxes fell.
Overcrowding, Lack of investment in schools, high levels of pollution , high rent and high crime. The suburbs had the opposite. More open spaces, better schools, cheaper rent.
What is “white flight”?
Counter urbanisation in New York of people leaving the cities. White 2nd Generation migrants who had done well enough to move out, have done so leaving behind poorer migrant communities which are traditionally black americans.
Why would someone want to live on Long Island rather than in Manhattan?
Manhattan is overcrowded so transport has made is easier to live and work in different places
What has led to suburbanisation in NYC
Subway and Rail Expanded in 1900. Manhattan to Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. Gave a greater space
for bigger houses and a quick commutes
2. Rise in car ownership – Bridges, fast freeways especially from Long Island to Bronx
