- Big industries dump their untreated industrial waste straight into the river.
- The airport uses it to dump its untreated oil

A
- River Mithi clogs up and blocks drains. Plants then grow on some of the waste - increasing the risk of flooding

What were the effects when the Mithi River flooded?
A
- Happened in July 2005. 1 quarter of Mumbai was flooded.
- Roads and railway lines were under water.
- No airports. No electricity. 400 people died

- By setting up Mithi River project with the river channel dreged to make it deeper
- This allows it to hold more water.
- Banks smoothed near bends in river.

- Exhaust gases from vehicles and smoke from burning rubbish and factory chimneys pollute the air
