  • That despite the improvements many of these didn’t benefit the original ‘eastenders’
  • Many locals were unable to afford the high costs of new expensive houses

  • Docks were closed in 1981 as ships had got too big to come up the thames
  • The docks were badly bombed during WW2
  • 20,000 jobs were lost to the docks
  • In 1981 60% of land was derelict
