Q

Name four economic activities in the Lake District and explain why each is suited to the glaciated landscape.

A

1) tourism- the hills create opportunities for walking and biking, the dramatic landscape also provides opportunities for tourists to practice photography or art and the lakes could also be used for water activities and sports.
2) quarrying- the glacier has deposited many valuable materials all in one location making it an ideal place to mine, particularly for materials such as sand or gravel which are used in concrete.
3) forestry- the acidic soils up the sides of the valley make the land under tile for most crops, this makes it cheaper and perfect for growing contiguous trees.
4) farming- further down the valley the minerals that the glacier deposited makes the land fertile for crops, or further up the valley where not much grows the land is cheap for grazing sheep and cattle.

Q

Suggest five reasons why tourism might be controversial in glaciated landscapes.

A

1) Dogs may scare livestock
2) litter may be left on the landscape which might be seen as ‘ruining’ it.
3) trespassing and leaving gates open cause damage of crops and arguments with farmers.
4) traffic problems cause issues with locals who have to travel in their daily lives
5) prices in shops and house prices increase because tourists will pay the higher prices because they aren’t staying long and want to ‘treat themselves’.

Q

Suggest five reasons why quarrying may be controversial in glaciated landscapes.

A

1) loud noises disturb and wake people in morning and evening
2) permanent damage and ‘scars’ in the landscape.
3) heavy machinery ruining and crowding roads.
4) air pollution mainly through dust make the landscape less appealing for local inhabitants and tourists.
5) land use has become industrial.

Q

Suggest 7 reasons why forestry is controversial in glaciated landscapes.

A

1) lack of biodiversity is ‘unnatural’
2) heavy machinery on roads causes dirty and damaged roads.
3) deforestation is unpleasant to watch and isn’t eco-friendly.
4) habitats would be disturbed continuously.
5) when cutting the trees it would be noisy.
6) close up the landscape and make it dark
7) risk of fire.

Q

Suggest six reason why farming could be controversial in glaciated landscapes ( particularly animal farming).

A

1) animals may litter on footpaths.
2) possible increase in diseases particularly for dogs, which could be passes on through tics which were in sheep.
3) animal noise in the morning, eg. Cows when being milked in the morning or sheep in lambing season.
4) animals on the road when they escape slow traffic.
5) animal transport both the animals themselves and animal feed.
6) tractors are heavy machinery that damage roads and slow traffic further.

Q

Suggest two management strategies for tourism in glaciated landscapes to reduce conflict.

A

1) sign posts to reduce trespassing and encourage closing gates and staying to set paths.
2) bins and sign posts to discourage littering and instead using bins or taking rubbish home.
