Q

Background

A

In 1933-1945 millions of people were killed during German holocaust. ( Jews, Romanians, disabled, trade unions )

This was due to Germans having extreme obedience and agentic state. They thought they were different to others.

Milgram, himself was a Jew and was affected by this German holocaust. Hence he wanted to see if in the 1960’s people from USA would obey, if he created, extreme situations.

Aim

What was the aim?

A

Was to test the ‘Germans are different’ hypothesis as in history Germans thought they were superior in society and therefore, for example, soldiers went into extreme obedience.

He wanted to investigate how obedient people would be to orders from a person in authority, which would result in pain and harm.

Participants:

Describe the participants ?

A

40 men aged 20-50.
Were recruited from an advert in a magazine hence were volunteers to take part in the study.

Self selecting sampling

If respondents turned up, they would get 4.50$. They did not have to complete whole study to get this money.

Q

Procedure

Tell me the steps that were done?

A
  1. Both learner and experimenter received instructions as bout the investigation of the effect of punishment and learning.
  2. They were told that one = learner and other would be teacher
  3. Pulled slips to see who would be who

Q

Procedure

What happened once they were selected?

A
  1. Learner was taken to a separate room to that of teachers
  2. Teachers were shown the electric shock generator as a try and what happened was:
    - A single 45 V shock
    - On wrist
    - using third switch
    - from a battery.
  3. Teacher than read out each pair of words to see which one corresponded best. If wrong shock would take place
  4. From 0-300 volts learner did not say anything. 300 to 315 pounded the wall and did not say anything else

Q

Results

Quantatitive data.

A

This was to measure the voltage achieved and number of participants gave it.

  1. Average voltage was 368 volts
  2. 65% followed instructions to hurt someone else
  3. 100% participants have 300 volts
17
Q

Results

WHAT were the predicted results

A
  1. Students predicted that a minority would go to the end.

Estimates ranged from 0-3%
Class mean of 1.2%

18
Q
Results
Qualitative
What was meant of this?
Most protested against?
Tension demonstrated??
A

Comments and protests made my participants during procedure and body language.

Most protested against the procedure, however due to extreme obedience they continued.

THE tensions showed:
Sweat
Tremble
Stutter
Bite their lips
'Oh god let's stop'
19
Q

Results

WHAT do these results show us

A
  • obedience did not depend on payment

- obedience was caused by other factors ma location lab coat

20
Q

Conclusion
WHAT was the conclusion of the study?
3

A

Milharam found that people are much more obedient to distributive orders

And found that revering ordered highly stressful, yet will follow them anyway.

Found out that Germans were not different as Us people did the same in 1960’s
