The sea punched a hole through the Portland Stone and has then eroded away the Wealden Clays and Sands, a less resistant rock.
It is a World Heritage Site because of its extraordinary geology and spectacular landscape.
A honeypot site since it attracts people from throughout the UK and beyond.
