Strengths of case studies

A

High in validity because the individual is explored in great depth.

-The researcher builds rapport with the subject, making it likely for them to open up and provide true information.

-The subject is less likely to show demand characteristics as case studies are longitudinal studies

-Case studies are valid because they use triangulation to obtain data which is then compared for accuracy

-High ecological validity because it occurs in the ss natural environment

Weaknesses of case studies

A

ethical weakness;breach of privacy and confidentiality - during case studies some questions may intrude into the ss personal life.

The researcher’s findings may be biased due to the close relation with the subject.

The data is low in reliability and replicability.

Low generalisability as only one single person is used

-Lower objectivity - researchers risk forming close attachments with their ss
