Cartilage/Joints Flashcards
Articular cartilage
A specific type of cartilage that covers the joint surfaces of bone.
Cartilage
Another form of connective tissue that is more elastic than bone.
Meniscus
A curved fibrous cartilage found in some joints that cushions forces applied to the joint.
Joints or articulations
Connections between bones
Synarthroses
Joints that allow no movement
Amphiarthroses
Joints that allow slight movement
Suture
A jagged line where bones join and form a nonmovable joint.
Fontanelle
A soft spot remaining at the junction of sutures that usually closes after birth.
Symphysis or cartilaginous joint
A joint where two bones join and are held firmly together so they function as one bone.
Mandibular Symphysis
The fusion of the mandible into one bone.
Pubic Symphysis
The fusion of the pelvis.
Synovial Joints or Enarthrosis
Ball-and-socket joints
Ball-and-Socket joints
Allow a wide range of motion in Manu directions
Arthrodial or Condyloid Joints
Joints with oval projections that fit into a socket
Trochoid Joints
Pulley-shaped joints like the connection between the atlas to the axis.
Hinge Joints
Allow motion in one plane or direction
Gliding Joints
Move or glide over each other
Ligament
Band if fibrous connective tissue that connects one bone to another bone
Tendon
Band if fibrous connective tissue that connects muscle to bone
Bursa
A fibrous sax that acts as a cushion to ease movements in areas of friction
Synovial membrane
An inner lining in the bursae and synovial membrane, acts as lubricant to make movement smooth.
Axial Skeleton
Framework of the body that includes the skull, auditory ossicles, hyoid bones, vertebral column, ribs, and sternum.
Appendicular Skeleton
Framework of the body that consists of the extremities, shoulder, and pelvic girdle.
