Cartilage Development Flashcards

1
Q

What is hyaline cartilage?

A

Complex matrix of:
collagen, proteoglycans and water

That provide and interface between bones and synovial joints

Resists compressive forces

Q

What is osteochondrosis?

A

A group of conditions of developing cartilage and its supporting bone:

  • osteocondritis dissecans
  • subchondral bone cysts
  • peri-articular fragmentation/fracture

Q

What is osteochondritis dissecans?

A

Detachment of a chondral or osteochondral fragment from the articular surface

Detached piece can lead to secondary OA

Q

What is peri-articular fragmentation/fracture?

A

Detachment of a chondral or osteochondral fragment from the peri-articular area

ex: fracture of the medial coronoid procress of the canine elbow

Q

What is a subchrondral bone cyst?

A

When cartilage and bone is lost and bone regrows around the cartilage, resulting in an encased piece of cartilage

Q

What is the pathophysiology of osteochondrosis?

A

Vascular problems in the epiphysis leads to failure of normal cartilage to bone succession

This can lead to an area that should be bone remaining as cartilage (can lead to subchondral bone cyst)

Q

What is the signalment and clinical signs of osteochondrosis?

A
Signalment
Fast growing, high performinc animals
Dogs: pure breeds
Pigs: landrace
Broiler chickens
CSs:
Variable lameness
Joint effusion
Often bilateral
Pain on manipulation of joint
Exercise intolerance

Q

What causes osteoarthritis in animals?

A

Occurs secondary to predisposing disease (i.e. osteochondrosis)

  • direct cartilage damage
  • fragmentation
  • mechanical incompentence
