CartilaGe and reGeneration Flashcards
What are the four basic types of tissue?
Epithelium
Connective Tissue
( Connective Tissue Proper ,Cartilage, Bone, Blood)
Muscle Tissue
Nervous Tissue
What are the Functions
of Connective Tissue:
- Provides support, strength, protection, insulation and metabolites.
- Highly vascular and has a good nerve supply (except cartilage and tendons).
- Supplies nutrients, O2 and removes waste from the tissues (blood vessels).
- It has a ground substance with a flexible matrix.
- Fibroblasts produce fibres i.e Collagen, elastic and reticular
What is the basic composition of cartilage?
Dense network of collagen fibres.
* Embedded in gelatinous ground substance - consistency of plastic.
How does cartilage receive nutrition ?
receive nutrition by diffusion through the gel.
where do cells exist in cartilage
Occur at scattered sites through the cartilage
where is cartilage found?
Joints, Ribs, Nose, Ear,
Trachea and Intervertebral Discs
What are the functions of cartilage
- Structural support,
- Maintain shape
- Absorb shock during physical exercise.
what does avascular mean?
having few or no blood vessels
why does collagen being avascular matter?
leads to hypoxic environment - limits rate of cell
growth and tissue regeneration.
which then limits the capacity of cartilage to repair itself in the event of damage.
what are chondrocytes?
cells responsible for cartilage formation
what do lacunae do?
secrete the extracellular matrix (ECM) of cartilage.
What is the extra cellular matrix made up of in cartillage
collagens, elastin, glycoproteins and proteoglycans, each of
which is present in varying amounts, depending on the type and
function of cartilage.
