Cartilage is usually found in close association with bone in the body
What is cartilage?
Cartilage is a type of connective tissue which is:
- tough
- semi-transparent
- elastic
- flexible
What does the matrix of cartilage mainly consist of?
Chondrin
What are cartilage cells called?
Chondrocytes
What lies scattered in the matrix of cartilage?
Cartilage cells (chondrocytes)
What does not occur in cartilage?
No nerves or blood vessels occur in cartilage
What is temporary cartilage?
When cartilage acts as a model and is gradually replaced by bone as an embryo grows
What is ossification?
Ossification is the process by which bone tissue follows the cartilage model and slowly replaces it.
What is permanent cartilage?
Cartilage which does not become ossified
Where is permanent cartilage found?
- tip of the nose
- external ear
- walls of the trachea (windpipe)
- larynx (voice-box)
