capitals = permanent dentition
lower case = primary dentition
what are the 7 elements of caries risk
clinical evidence dietary habits social history fluoride use oral hygiene saliva medical history
clinical evidence and caries risk
past caries experience can indicate risk
DMFT more than or equal to 5 = high risk
caries in 6’s at 6 years = high risk
dietary habits and caries risk
more than or equal to 3 intakes of sugar a day = higher risk
frequency more of an issue than volume
social history and caries risk
education, unemployment, single parent, violence etc
fluoride use and caries risk
infrequent fluoride toothpaste use? no fluoride in water,
oral hygiene and caries risk
poor technique, irregular brushing, unassisted (very young and very old/ disabled should be aided), access to toothbrush and toothpaste
saliva and caries risk
amount , flow, buffering capacity, pH
medical history and caries risk
xerostomia = side effects of some drugs , medicines containing sugar.
fluorosis
excess fluoride during tooth development
minor = pearly white lines / flecks
severe = discoloured enamel
why do initial carious lesions appear as white spot lesions
caries = demineralisation of enamel therefore unalignment of enamel rods
this gives a more opaque appearance as light can no longer shine through rods, instead it is refracted
what is the name of prescription toothpaste
duraphat
if a tooth had translucent incisal edges what condition may be diagnosed
erosion
