Caries & Restorative Dentistry Flashcards
Important bacteria in caries
S.Mutans ——— initiation of caries. Lactobacillus —— propagation of caries Actinomycetes —- cause root surface caries
Indications of stainless steel crowns
1- extensive decay in primary and young permanent teeth (rampant). 2-teeth with developmental or hypo plastic defects 3- after pulp therapy. 4-as preventive restoration in high caries susceptible patients. 5- as an abutment for space maintainer 6- as temporary restoration of fractured tooth 7- in case of single tooth cross bite by using reverse stainless steel crown
Down ‘s syndrome and caries
Incidence of dental caries is low in Down’s syndrome but PERIODONTAL DISEASE IS MUCH HIGHER
Tooth preparation for stainless steel crown
Buccal and lingual —0.5 mm (least reduction) Occlusal— 1.5-2mm. Proximal—-1-1.5mm. Gingival termination—-0.5 -1mm into sulcus. Gingival finish line—feather edge
Primary teeth enamel and dentin thickness
Primary teeth has THIN ENAMEL and DENTIN. With large pulp chamber. Enamel thickness::: Primary teeth—approximately 1mm Permanent teeth —-2-3 mm
Rubber dam size
55”—-size for children. 66”___size for adults
Salivary factors and their Role -1. HCO3, UREA ,PROTEINS ——
BUFFERING ACTION
Salivary factors and their Role -2. LYSOZYME,LACTO PEROXIDASE——
Breaks bacterial cell walls, Oxidation of susceptible bacteria
Salivary factors and their Role -3. STATHERIN , PROLINE - rich proteins
Bind to hydroxyapatite, Aid in supersaturation of saliva , Make tooth resistant to caries
RIGAFEDE DISEASE
Characterised by laceration of lingual surface of tongue because of the sharp incisal edges of the natal and neonatal teeth
KEYS TRIAD
Keys triad includes———- 1— HOST/TOOTH. 2—MICROFLORA. 3—SUBSTRATE to meet the requirements of microflora {NEWBRUN CARIES TETROLOGY includes a 4 th factor TIME to existing Keyes concept }
ESTHETIC PREFORMED CROWNS ::: 1–POLYCARBONATE
-They SAVE TIME -Easy to TRIM. -can be easily adjusted with PLIERS
ESTHETIC PREFORMED CROWNS ::: 2–STRIP CROWNS
-These are crown forms which are filled with composites and bonded on the tooth and the crown is then REMOVED -Most COMMONLY USED in pediatric dental practice. -Easy to REPAIR
