Caries-Caries part 1 Flashcards
what are the 2 things we try to consider when recogniseing caries?
- caries lesions
- Circumstances that led to the disease
what 3 things does diagnosis rely on ?
- is caries present (detection)
- Is caries active
- Risk of pain/ abscess before exfoliation
define exfoliation in dentistry?
shedding of primary teeth which are then repalced by secondary teeth.
what helps with diagnosing caries ?
- Clean/ Dry/ illuminated teeth
- Magnificatin
- light properties of demineralised enamel.
- fluorescence/ electrical conductance/
what is electrical impedance
measurements of root canal lenght.
what are orthodontics separating elastics? and how long do we allow them to be put on ?
they are a peice of rubber which separates teeth and allows a view of proximal tooth surfaces.
they are put on for - 3-5 days.
what is transillumination good for?
it is good for diagnosing proximal lesions on anterior permanent teeth.
why do we use different diagnostic tools?
bc caries behave differently in different anatomical sites and lesions 1 diagnostical tool will not have the adequate sensitivity and specificity of detecting such lesion.
what is an OPT
it is a radiograph of the entire mouth.
