Caregiver Interactions Flashcards
RECIPROCITY
attachments develop by…
a shared process which is TWO-WAY, where an emotional connection develops between an infant and his/hers primary caregiver
RECIPROCITY
example
caregiver reacts and responds to the signals given by the baby e.g smiling BACK when they smile
-this gives warmth and comfort
INTERACTIONAL SYNCHRONY
definition
where the caregiver and infant interact in such a way that their actions and emotions mirror eachother
in a pair
Strength of caregiver infant interactions (control)
used CONTROLLED PROCEDURES
- mother infant interactions usually filmed, and often from multiple angles
- this increases reliability of observation
Weakness of caregiver infant interactions (what is happening)
HARD TO KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING when observing infants
-for example, many studies into mother infant interactions found what is being observed is actually merely hand movements/ change in expression
Weakness of caregiver infant interaction (socially)
SOCIALLY SENSITIVE
suggests children may be disadvantaged by particular child rearing practises
Weakness of caregiver infant interactions (purpose)
DO NOT TELL PURPOSE
- observations do not tell us purpose of synchrony and reciprocity
- only that they happen
