Caregiver-Infant Interactions in humans Flashcards
What is attachment?
A strong reciprocal emotional bond between an infant and primary care giver
What is reciprocal attachment?
Both ways - the child has a bond with the mother and the mother has to bond with. the child for a successful attachment to form. They both have to contribute to the relationship to generate a response
Give an example of a reciprocal attachment
When a parent smiles at a child and the child smiles back
Who and what was reciprocity found by?
Brazelton - found that children as young as 2 weeks can attempt copy their caregiver, who in turn responds to the child’s signals 2/3 of the time
Why is reciprocity important?
It is teaching a child to communicate. It allows the parent to able to care for the child better as they can detect cues from the baby and respond sooner and more effectively.
What is interactional synchrony?
When the infant and primary caregiver become synchronised in their interactions
What did Cordon and Sander find in 1974?
Children can synchronise their movements with the sound of an adults voice
What did Bazelton find? (IS)
Infants copy distinct facial expressions or gestures
What influences the way that the 2 interact?
Rhythm, pitch and volume of the adults speech
What happens if the Rhythm, pitch and volume of the adults speech is good?
It leads to better communication between the child and parent when they’re older and is likely to happen if the caregiver fully attends to the baby through attentive play
Give a + (CO)
These studies used controlled observations. Brazelton filmed the interactions from different angles. This ensure high levels of accuracy and allows valid conclusions to be drawn because they can rewatch and independent observers can rewatch the tapes and compare
Give a - (AM)
With young children we don’t know if their actions are meaningful. Bremmer drew the distinction between behavioural response and understanding : by saying just because man interaction appears to be reciprocal doesn’t mean the child understands
