Career Goals Flashcards

1
Q
  1. Do you prefer to work under supervision, or on your own? What kind of boss do you prefer?
A

Preferably, I would like to be in a position that my supervisor has faith in me to complete my work accurately and on time. If working with my supervisor is necessary than I am fine with it. Currently, I generally get an email or call with any special project detailing what is needed, the deliverables expected, conditions that might apply, and a due date. I complete the project before the due date and turn in the deliverables. After reviewing it, I simply get a thank you call or email from my manager. Everything else in running the store I get about a hour visit to update him and discuss anything that needs his support.
I look for 2 traits in my manager: Integrity and Communication. I find that if I have those 2 traits, it makes everything my employees and myself do be more productive.

Q
  1. Would you be successful working with a team? Can you give an example of a time in which you worked with a team?
A

Yes, I have worked with teams frequently in the past and find them very valuable for both the company and the individual. The MBA program at Ohio State highlights the benefits of working in teams in almost every class. During my MBA classes I likely completed around 20 team projects. Personally, I see the value in working with teams as a chance to learn from people with diverse skill sets.
S: A couple years back I was a part of a consulting team for Fisher Professional Services which is the paid consulting group at Ohio State.
T: The Richland County Development Group hired us to develop an implementation plan for economic development and attracting young professionals to the county.
A: We came up with a list of proposals as well as a marketing plan for the county. After narrowing down the list of proposals to ten we began working in teams to complete the project. We met weekly with each other and had conference calls with the client to provide updates and get help with new contacts. I completed the marketing plan and worked on proposals with others in the group throughout the project.
R: A formal presentation and a paper that coincided with the presentation were the deliverables. We presented the final project to not only the RCDG, but also mayors, commissioners, and other county leaders there as well. The RCDG was very pleased with our work and asked us if we could possibly present it to others groups in the future.
Work related: Independents with DM and RXS.

Q
  1. What other types of positions are you considering?
A

I am open to many positions based on my MBA and work experience. Through different classes and experiences, I have found that I would enjoy operations, logistics, finance, lean/six sigma, strategy, and consulting as great opportunities. (other than project mgmt.)

Q
  1. Are you able to work on several assignments at once?
A

Yes, although I believe it is necessary to manage time so that full concentration can be on one task whenever possible.
S: The last few years have necessitated time management and prioritization as never before in my life. With running a $9 million a year business as well as the assignments and projects that come with earning an MBA.
T: I needed to find avenues to prioritize all of those tasks and their various due dates.
A: The first step for me was to keep a calendar of all expected due dates and daily tasks to get a better overall picture. Next came the prioritization of the tasks and finally I divided up my time to complete them all.
R: Using this method I have been able to exceed expectations on my reviews while completing my MBA and still having time to spend with my family and work in the community.

Q
  1. How do you plan to achieve your career goals?
A

I have laid out 5 year plans the last 15 years. Currently, I am looking for the right opportunity to grow my responsibilities and succeed. I have no hidden secrets, just a strong work ethic, creative mind, and a desire for new challenges. I have tried to develop new skills throughout my career and time in college by stepping outside my comfort zones to challenge myself and discover new abilities.
