What happens to a mother with severe diabetes ?
May give birth to a SGA ( small gestational age) infant
When diabetes is poorly controlled

IDM characteristics
●Macrosomia (large)
●Ruddy in color (red)
●Has excess adipose tissue
●Imbelical cord thick placenta large
●Decreased total body water
●Excessive weight due to increased weight if visceral organs hyperthrophy and increased body fat
Common Complications of IDM(Immune Mediated Diabetes Mellitus)
●Hypoglycemia (40 45) cold clammy poor feeding
●Hypocalcemia ( less than 7) tremmors
●Hyperbilirubenemia ( birth trauma and bruises)
●Birth trauma
●Polycythemia ( ruddy color)
●Respiratory distress syndrome ( no surfactant increased blood sugar can inhibit surfactant)
Congenital malformations
What are the nursing management for IDM?
Early detection
Blood glucose hourly first 4 hrs then q4 during first 48 hrs
IDMs with hypoglycemia early feedings
Assess fir birth trauma and congenital anomalies
