Assessment Care of Newborn And Infants Flashcards
Very premature age of neonates
Less than 32 weeks gestation
Brith weights
Low birth weights 2500 grams
Vlowbirth weights 1500 grams
Extremelow less than 1000 grams
Weights of neonates contraindications for intubation
Under 500 grams
What is the right age of infants to start bottle feeding
34 weeks
What are the physiologic abd anatomic factors that increase heat loss in rpeterm infants?
High ratio of body surface to body weight ( bec of flat posture)
Has very little subcutaneous fat
Preterm has thinner and permeable skin
Posture of baby influences heat loss
Decreased abilityvto vasoconstrict superficial blood vessels and conserve heat in the body core
***keep under radiant warmer
**lessen oxygen consumption
**keep glocuse level regular
What are the nursing interventions to minimize heat loss?
Allow skin to skin between mother and baby
Warm and humidify oxygen
Place baby in doubled wall incubator (plexie glass)
Avoid placing infant in cold surface
Gavage feeding (NGT)
Used for preterm infants who lack or are poorly coordinated with suck swallow
Watch for skin breakdown
Watch carefully, and the baby might pull it it lead to aspiration
Intervention for Botte feeding
Feeding should take no lobger than 15 to 20 minutes
Burp frequently
Start with 1 session a day and increase slowly until infant can tokerate all bottle feedings
What are the signs and symptoms of stress or fatigur in neonates?
Physiologic instability
Fluctuating tone
Lack of control over movement
Disorganized
Closed eyes and sleeplike withdrawal
Temp axillary low
No energy skin is pale cyanotic
Low blood sugar
Tone no energy
Weak suck
Drop HR
Bradycardia
More flaccid and jittery
Cold stress Risk factors
Premature babies
Hypoglycemia
Sepsis
Post mature babies characteristics
Any new born after 42 weeks of gestation
Some over 4kg in brith weight
At 42 weeks, placentavsops worling like normal, stops transporting blood and the baby starts to lose weight
Characteristics of post mature infants
Post maturity syndrome
Decreased placental function ( prone to hypoglycemia and hypoxemia)
Dry crackling skin prachment like skin(vernix disspeared )
Long fingernails
Profuse hair
He appears long and thin
Fat layes non-existent
Frequently meconium stained
What are the nursing interventions of post mature infants?
Provide newborn care ( stimulate airway, temperature keep warm)
Check blood sugars frequently feed them early to keep glucose regular
Monitor respiratory status monitor aspirration/check meconium on lungs)
