Name the major precipitating cause of endocarditis
Bacteria: (65%) strep species VIRIDANS group
(20%) staph species AUREUS
What are the 4 High Risk Conditions to use prophylaxis antibiotics in endocarditis?
1- Prosthetic Heart Valve
2- Prior history of Infective Endocarditis
3- Cardiac valvulopathy in transplanted heart
4- Congenital Heart Defects: unprepared defects, < 6 months post-op from defects repair, repaired defects with residual defects.
How have the Infectious Endocarditis AHA Guidelines for Prophylactic treatment changed since the last (1997) guidelines.
They are much stricter. Before, they allowed for moderate to high risk conditions, now it is limited to high risk categories.
