Cardiovascular system Flashcards
What 3 Factors affect vascular resistance?
1) Size of lumen: the larger to lumen the less resistance
2) Blood viscosity: the thinner the blood the less resistance
3) Length: the shorter the length the less resistance
What are the 3 types of arteries?
Elastic arteries: can handle large fluctuations in BP
Muscular arteries: regulate blood distribution
Small arteries: have a thinner wall
What are the formed elements of blood?
Erythrocytes: carry O2
Leukocytes: for immunity
Platelets: function in clotting
Structure of an erythrocyte?
- biconcave discs
- lack a nucleus
- generate ATP anaerobically as they lack a mitochondria
What is erythropoeitin
hormone that stimulates RBC production that is released by the kidneys –> released in response to low blood O2 levels
What is bilirubin?
Where RBC’s are broken down. Is secreted in bile.
