cardiovascular system Flashcards
State the functions of the cardiovascular system
- transports heat, oxygen, nutrients and hormones to the tissues
- protection through the transport of white blood cells and clotting factors.
- regulation of body temperature.
State the main function of the heart valves
coronary valves
Atrioventricular valves prevent back-flow of blood in the heart.
This keeps blood flowing in one direction.
*To ensure one-way blood flow through the heart by opening and closing at the appropriate times, preventing backflow.
Describe the blood flow through the heart
1 right atrium
2 right atrioventricular
valve (tricuspid valve)
3 right ventricles
4 pulmonary valves
5 left atriums
6 left atrioventricular
valve (mitral valve)
7 left ventricles
8 aortic valves
Name the two systems (circulatory paths) of the cardiovascular system
a. Pulmonary circulation: Blood flow between the heart and lungs.
b. Systemic circulation: Blood flow between the heart and the rest of the body.
Reasons for the difference in structure between the left and right side of the heart
The Left Ventricle is larger and thicker than the Right Ventricle.
This is because the left ventricle pumps the blood further and at high pressure
Identify the following conditions of the cardiovascular system SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS – myocardial infarction and hypertension
a. Myocardial infarction (heart attack): Chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, and discomfort in arms or back.
b. Hypertension (high blood pressure): Often asymptomatic, but severe cases may present with headaches, dizziness, and shortness of breath.
