Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Functions of the cardiovascular system
Transport oxygen, nutrients, cell wastes, hormones
to and from cells
Orientation of the heart. (Apex & Base)
-Apex (pointed region) is directed toward left hip and
rests on the diaphragm
– Base (area where great blood vessels emerge) points
toward right shoulder
Coverings of the heart
Double walled sac:
- Parietal pericardium
- Visceral pericardium
What are the 3 walls of the heart?
- Epicardium
- Myocardium
- Endocardium
What separates the two atria longitudinally?
Interatrial Septum.
What separates the two ventricles longitudinally?
Interventricular septum.
What is the heart’s double pump?
– Right side works as the pulmonary circuit pump
– Left side works as the systemic circuit pump
What do the heart valves prevent?
Allow blood to flow in only one direction to prevent
backflow
Where are the semilunar valves located?
Between ventricle and artery
When are AV valves open and closed?
– Open during heart relaxation, when blood passively
fills the chambers
– Closed during ventricular contraction
When are semilunar valves open and closed?
– Closed during heart relaxation
– Open during ventricular contraction
What is the function of cardiac veins?
Drain the myocardium of blood
Function of the coronary sinus.
Receive blood from cardiac veins
What two systems regulate heart activity?
- Autonomic nervous system
- Intrinsic conduction system (nodal system)
What starts each heartbeat?
The sinoatrial node (SA node)
What is Tachycardia?
Rapid heart rate, over 100 beats per minute
What is Bradycardia?
Slow heart rate, less than 60 beats per minute
What is the average HR?
About 75 beats per mn
What are the 5 events of the cardiac cycle?
- Atrial diastole
- Atrial systole
- Isovolumetric contraction
- Ventricular systole
- Isovolumetric Relaxation
What do we use to measure heart function?
Electrocardiogram ECG=EKG
What is Cardiac output?
Amount of blood pumped by each side of the heart in 1 minute. SV x HR= CO
What is stroke volume?
Volume of blood pumped by each ventricle in one contraction.
What carries blood away from the heart?
Arteries and arterioles
Vessels that return blood toward the heart?
Venules and veins
