Cardiovascular system Flashcards
5 Functions of the Cardiovascular system
- Circulates blood to all parts of the body
- Transports oxygen, nutrients and water to the cells
- Removes wastes such as carbon dioxide from the cells
- Maintains body temperature
- Helps fight disease through white blood cells and antibodies contained in the blood
What is the anatomy of the heart
- 2 upper chambers, the atria, right and left atrium, are responsible for receiving blood
- 2 lower chambers, the ventricles, right and left ventricle, are responsible for pumping blood throughout the body (as a result more muscular than the atria)
Role of the Right side of heart
- Receives deoxygenated blood from the body
- This side pumps the blood to the lungs through the pulmonary arteries after travelling through the right atrium and right ventricle
Role of the left side of the heart
-Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs
-blood returns from the lungs through the pulmonary veins
-this side pumps blood through the left atrium and left ventricle to the body via the aorta
What is Systole?
The heart contracts, forcing blood out of the heart through the ventricles and into arteries.
What is Diastole?
The heart relaxes, filling with blood from the veins.
What is heart rate?
The number of times the heart contracts or beats per minute (bpm).
What is Stroke Volume?
The amount of blood pumped out of the aorta each time it beats
What is cardiac output?
The amount of blood pumped by the heart each minute. EQUATION: (Q=SV x HR)
What is the cardiac cycle
The process of the heart filling with blood and then pumping the blood to the rest of the body
Red blood cells function
Transports oxygen around the body
White blood cells function
Protects against disease
Platelets function
Causes blood to clot when a blood vessel is damaged
Plasma function
carries blood cells around the body
2 functions of blood
- Thermoregulation
- carrying antibodies to fight infection
