Cardiovascular system Flashcards

1
Q

5 Functions of the Cardiovascular system

A
  1. Circulates blood to all parts of the body
  2. Transports oxygen, nutrients and water to the cells
  3. Removes wastes such as carbon dioxide from the cells
  4. Maintains body temperature
  5. Helps fight disease through white blood cells and antibodies contained in the blood

Q

What is the anatomy of the heart

A
  • 2 upper chambers, the atria, right and left atrium, are responsible for receiving blood
  • 2 lower chambers, the ventricles, right and left ventricle, are responsible for pumping blood throughout the body (as a result more muscular than the atria)

Q

Role of the Right side of heart

A
  • Receives deoxygenated blood from the body
  • This side pumps the blood to the lungs through the pulmonary arteries after travelling through the right atrium and right ventricle

Q

Role of the left side of the heart

A

-Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs
-blood returns from the lungs through the pulmonary veins
-this side pumps blood through the left atrium and left ventricle to the body via the aorta

Q

What is Systole?

A

The heart contracts, forcing blood out of the heart through the ventricles and into arteries.

Q

What is Diastole?

A

The heart relaxes, filling with blood from the veins.

Q

What is the cardiac cycle

Q

Blood circulation Systems: Pulmonary circulation

A

-Moves blood between the heart and lungs
-transports DEOXYGENATED blood to the lungs to absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide

17
Q

Cardiovascular system response to exercise (acute/immediate)

A

-Increased heart rate: as the intensity of exercise increases, heart rate rises to supply more oxygen and energy to keep up with the body’s demand

-Increased stroke volume: as the intensity of exercise increases, the amount of blood pumped does too, in order to increase the flow of oxygen around the body

17
Q

Blood circulation Systems: Systemic circulation

A
  • moves blood between the heart and the rest of the body
-carries OXYGENATED blood from the heart through arteries to the capillaries in the tissues of the body
