Cardiovascular system Flashcards
What are the main functions of the cardiovascular system? x3
- Brings O2 and nutrients to the body’s cells
- Removes waste and CO2
- Carries hormones from and to parts of the body
What are the main components of the cardiovascular system? x3
Heart
Blood
Blood vessels e.g. veins, arteries
Where is the heart located?
Slightly left to sternum
Above diaphragm
In between lungs
How is the heart made up?
x4 chambers: right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle
x4 valves: aortic, mitral, pulmonary, tricuspid (regulate blood flow through the heart)
What is the simplified blood circulation process?
Right side: receives blood and sends it to the lungs
Left side: receives blood from lungs and pumps it around the body
What do the processes of systole and diastole refer to?
Systole - ventricles contract - forces vessels to lungs
Diastole - ventricles relax
How is the heart nourished?
Blood
Coronary arteries cover heart
Branch into smaller capillaries
How is the heart kept beating?
Electrical impulses received by right atrium
Conduction system - keeps heart beating in a coordinated rhythm
