Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Arteries
a blood vessel in humans, and most other animals that takes blood away from the heart to one or more parts of the body (tissues, lungs, brain etc.).
Blood vessels
A tube through which the blood circulates in the body. Blood vessels include a network of arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, and veins.
Capillaries
Tiny vessels that branch off from arteries to deliver blood to all body tissues
Deoxygenated
as oxygen has been removed.
Heart
A muscular pump that forces blood around the body
Oxygen
The odorless gas that is present in the air and necessary to maintain life.
Oxygenated
Oxygenated blood refers to the blood that has been exposed to oxygen in the lungs.
Pulmonary circulation
The pulmonary circulation, between the heart and lungs, transports deoxygenated blood to the lungs to get oxygen, and then back to the heart.
Systemic circulation
carries oxygenated blood away from the heart to the tissues and cells, and then back to the heart.
Veins
Vessels that bring blood back to the heart.
Size of heart
The muscle that pumps blood received from veins into arteries throughout the body
How many chambers does the heart have?
4
Location of heart
the heart is approximately the size of a closed fist and is located between the lungs, in the middle compartment of the chest.
Apex
the transformation of the organism. From a single cell, the organism can develop into a multicellular organism.
Endocardium
The endocardium is the innermost layer of tissue that lines the chambers of the heart
Myocardium
f three types of vertebrate muscle tissue, with the other two being skeletal muscle and smooth muscle
Pericardium
The conical sac of fibrous tissue that surrounds the heart and the roots of the great blood vessels.
Atria
an imaginary line passing through the jugular notch superiorly,
Ventricles
a cavity of a bodily part or organ: such as
a chamber of the heart which receives blood from a corresponding atrium
Tricuspid valve
the cardiac valve guarding the opening between the right atrium and right ventricle
Pulmonary valve
The pulmonary valve is a valve of the heart that lies between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery and has three cusps
Mitral valve
A valve in the heart that is situated between the left atrium and the left ventricle.
Aortic valve
One of the four valves in the heart, this valve is situated at exit of the left ventricle of the heart where the aorta (the largest of all arteries) begins
