Cardiovascular & Respiratory Systems Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the process of the heart beat.
A
The pacemaker (SA node) sends electrical impulses over to atria, to the AV node, down the bundle branches to the Purkinje fibres in ventricles.
2
Q
What is the function of the valves in the heart?
A
Prevent back flow of blood during contraction.
3
Q
What is systolic pressure?
A
Maximum pressure exerted by blood against artery walls as a result of ventricular contraction.
4
Q
What is diastolic pressure?
A
Lowest pressure in the artery resulting from ventricular relaxation.
5
Q
What are the functions of the respiratory system?
A
- to deliver air to the delicate respiratory exchange surfaces in the lungs.
- to allow oxygen to diffuse into the blood to be transported to all living cells to produce energy for cell processes.
- to allow carbon dioxide to diffuse from blood to air for exhalation.
6
Q
Define blood pressure.
A
The force of pressure which the blood exerts on the walls of the blood vessels in which it is contained in.
