Cardiovascular Physiology Flashcards
What is cardiovascular physiology?
Study of the cardiovascular system specifically the heart and blood vessels
What is the pericardium membrane?
Encloses the heart. Secretes a lubricant called pericardial fluid
What is the role of the pericardium?
Protects the heart from overexpansion
What is the role of the pulmonary artery?
Carry blood from your heart to the lungs
What is the role of the vena cava
Carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body
What is the role of the aorta
Transport oxygenated blood through the body
What is the function of valves
Prevent backflow of blood
What is the function of the pulmonary vein
Carries oxygenated blood from the lungs back to the heart
How does the cardiovascular system work?
- Deoxygenated blood enters the right side of the heart
- Deoxygenated blood is pumped to the lungs
- The lungs reoxygenate the blood
- The oxygenated blood is pumped to the left side of the heart
- The oxygenated blood is pumped to the rest of the body
What is lub-dub?
The sounds of the valves opening and closing. The blood slaps against the valve.
What is systole and diastole
Systole: contraction
Diastole: relaxation, ventricles filling
Ventricular systole > diastole > atrial systole
What is the process of a heartbeat
- Sinoatrial node (SAN) produces an electrical impulse across the left and right atria
- Right and left atria contract simultaneously
- Electrical impulses transferred from SAN to atrioventricular node (AVN)
- Impulse goes down the bundle of His
- Fibres split into finer muscle fibres called Purkinje fibres. They cause the ventricles to contract.
