Cardiovascular Pathology Flashcards
What is angina Pectoris
chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart due to myocardial ischemia
what is myocardial infarction
blood supply to the heart being blocked resulting in a heart attack
What is a stable angina
chest pain caused by imbalance of blood flow through coronary arteries , the pain is triggered by excersise, stress and emotion
What is a unstable angina
chest pain caused by a build up of atherosclerotic plaque in coronary arteries . The pain is frequent and prolonged and occurs at rest
What is NSTEMI
a complete blockage of minor coronary artery or partial blockage of major coronary artery causing partial thickness damage of heart muscle.
What is STEMI
a complete blockage of major coronary artery causing full thickness damage of heart muscle
What is the initial assessment for a patient presenting with heart problems
Full clinical history , physical examination, resting ECG, blood tests
What is a clinical history assessment
check for any history of risk factors and investigation of similar symptoms
What is a physical examination
checking blood pressure, heart rate for signs of unstable blood flow indicated by low blood pressure
What is a ECG test
test to show electrical activity of the heart which can show arrythmias and ST elevation
How does a blood test aid assessment
abnormal levels of cardiac specific protiens can be detected
How does a chest Xray aid assessment
allows us to identify mishaped or enlarged heart that indicated disease
