Cardiovascular Drift Flashcards
What is Cardiovascular Drift?
The gradual rise in HR in the body towards the end of prolonged exercise despite staying at the same level of intensity
What does Cardiovascular drift occur?
Due to changes in the SV- decreasing.
What are the reasons for cardiovascular drift?
Decrease in blood volume
Thermoregulation techniques
How does Blood Volume add to cardiovascular drift?
It gradually decreases, there’s less blood and it’s more viscus.
Bloodflow back to the heart is slower due to the blood pushing against the vessel walls.
Ventricular ejection is much lower so SV decreases.
How does Thermoregulation add to cardiovascular drift?
Leads to lower BP, less blood can make it back to the heart in the same amount of time.
Less blood into the heart, less blood out due to Starling’s Law.
How does vasodilation affect cardiovascular drift?
Vasodilation of the blood vessels near the skin to aid heat loss further
