Cardiovascular Disease Flashcards
What are the types of CVD?
- coronary heart disease
- stroke
What does coronary heart disease affect?
Affects the coronary arteries that supply the heart muscle with oxygenated blood.
What can coronary heart disease cause?
- heart attacks
- angina
What is a stroke?
When the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off e.g. by a blood clot or a ruptured blood vessel in the brain.
What is the pneumonic for a stroke?
F - ace - droops on one side
A -rms - if one arm cannot be lifted
S - speech - slurred
T - ime - to call 999
What lifestyle factors increase the risk of CVD?
diet high in fat high salt intake excess eating which leads to obesity high blood pressure smoking inactivity
how does smoking increase the risk of CVD?
Carbon monoxide binds to the haemoglobin - reducing oxygen levels in the blood.
Heart rate increases - increasing blood pressure
Nicotine increases adrenaline, causing an increased heart rate along with contraction of artery walls. Increases blood pressure.
Chemicals in smoke damage endothelium or arteries - leading to atherosclerosis
