Carbohydrate Structure - polysaccharides Flashcards
What are polysaccharides?
large, insoluble molecules
chains of monosaccharides
What are the storage polysaccharides in plants?
Starch - amylose + amylopectin
What are the storage polysaccharides in animals?
Glycogen in liver cells and muscles
What is the structure of amylose?
coiled chain
unbranched
hundreds of glucose molecules
What are the bonds in amylose?
1,4 glycosidic bonds
What is the structure in glycogen and amylopectin?
coiled
branched
chains of glucose
What are the bonds in glycogen and amylopectin?
1,4 and 1,6 glycosidic bonds
1,6 bonds allow branches to form.
Benefit of coiled molecules -
compact, a lot of energy can be stored in a small space.
Benefit of being insoluble -
does not diffuse out of the cell
no osmotic effect on the cell
Benefit of being branched -
Can be broken down faster
Allows rapid release of glucose to provide energy in respiration.
