Cardiovascular Disease Flashcards
What is it
๐น A group of heart & blood vessel disorders including:
Coronary artery disease (CAD)
Heart failure
Stroke
Peripheral artery disease (PAD)
๐น Leading cause of death worldwide
Clinical presentation
Coronary artery disease (CAD):
Chest pain (angina)
Shortness of breath
Heart attack (myocardial infarction)
๐น Heart failure:
Swelling in legs (edema)
Fatigue, weakness
Fluid buildup (pulmonary congestion)
๐น Stroke:
Sudden weakness, numbness (one-sided)
Slurred speech, vision loss
๐น Peripheral artery disease (PAD):
Leg pain with walking (claudication)
Cold, pale extremities
Epidemiology
๐น #1 cause of death globally (~32% of deaths worldwide)
๐น More common in men, but high risk for postmenopausal women
๐น Coronary artery disease (CAD) & stroke โ most common types
Age groups affected
๐น Risk increases with age, especially >50 years
๐น Atherosclerosis starts early, often asymptomatic for years
๐น Young adults at risk if they have strong genetic or lifestyle factors
Risk factor
๐น Modifiable:
High blood pressure (hypertension)
High cholesterol (hyperlipidemia)
Smoking ๐ฌ
Diabetes ๐ฉธ
Obesity ๐๏ธโโ๏ธ
Unhealthy diet (high salt, trans fats)
๐น Non-modifiable:
Age (>50 years)
Family history of CVD
Ethnicity (higher risk in African, South Asian populations)
Clinical features
๐น General signs:
Chest pain (angina, heart attack)
Shortness of breath
Dizziness, fainting (arrhythmias, stroke)
Leg swelling (heart failure)
Cold, discolored limbs (PAD)
๐น Severe cases โ Heart attack, stroke, heart failure, sudden cardiac arrest
Prognosis
๐ข What is the outlook for CVD?
๐น Chronic but manageable with lifestyle changes & treatment
๐น High mortality if untreated (e.g., heart attack, stroke)
๐น Medical therapy & surgeries (bypass, stents) improve survival
๐น Prevention is key!
