28
Pericardium
Sac around the heart. Filled with pericardial fluid. Works as shock absorber.
29
Cardiac temponade
Too much fluid in the pericardium. Squeezes the heart and limits the ability to beat.
30
Systolic
Contraction of the heart
31
Diastolic
Relaxation of the heart
32
Pulmonary emboli
A clot breaks loose within a patient's artery and floats through the vascular system until it lodges somewhere between the heart and the lungs. The condition is extremely painful, has immediate onset, and very often ends in death.
33
myocardial infarction
Heart attack. Nice-to-Know Information
Three major vessels supply blood to the heart. When these vessels become tight or partially occluded, the doctor may order a blood thinner (usually coumadin), which prolongs the process of blood clotting. This makes it less likely that the patient will develop a blood clot (thrombus) that might block off an occluded artery.
34
Stroke
A thrombus may also float to the brain and block its blood supply. This is called a stroke. High blood pressure can also cause a cerebral bleed, which can be exacerbated by blood thinners. This is also called a stroke. The cerebral bleed type of stroke most often ends in death.
