cardiovascular Flashcards
what is the pathophysiology of pericarditis?
inflammation occurs from infections, CT disease, kidney disease with uremia, trauma, myocardial infarction, or drugs. pericardial capillaries dilate and allow proteins and fluid to enter pericardial space. fibrin exudate forms and collects in the pericardial space/sac
what complication can occur when too much fluid builds up in the pericardial sac?
cardiac tamponade
how is myocardial infarction different from myocardial ischemia in terms of its effect on the cardiac cells?
cell death occurs with infarction. cells lack oxygen but aren’t dead with ischemia
risk factors for atherosclerosis
high fat diet, sedentary lifestyle, aging, family history, being a man, hypertension, smoking, stress, C reactive porotein, high homocysteine
name the primary difference in blood flow between acute arterial occlusions and deep vein thrombosis
with arterial embolism, oxygenated blood cannot get to the tissues. with venous thrombosis, deoxygenated blood cannot get out of the tissue to return to the heart.
