Cardiovascular Flashcards
Dilated cardiomyopathy
CVD L. ventricle stretches & dilates affecting heart’s ability to pump blood–> arrhythmias, blood clots, or death
Signs: murmurs, swelling of lower extremities
Symptoms: tired, can’t breathe, heart fluttering
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
genetic mutation thickens heart
few symptoms
congestive heart failure
weak heart, fluid buildup in lungs; shortness of breath
a unique cause of congestive heart failure
Myocarditis, often called by viurs
What Dx test can impact kidney function?
CT/MRI in people with congestive heart failure
What are the preferred medications for restrictive cardiomyopathy?
beta blockers & blood thinners
Ocular complications of Marfan Syndrome
Ectopia lentis (upward lens displacement) Glaucoma
echocardiogram
shows size, shape, & how heart is pumping blood
transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE)
Insert sound wave probe into esophagus (under anesthesia) for clear image of heart
Chest X-ray
shows enlarged sections, Ca deposits, or fluid in lungs
cardiac catherization
for CVD, assess if problem is valve or blockage in arteries (if ECH concerns)
MRI
magnetic field & radio waves for 2/3-D images of blood vessels
atrial fibrillation
rapid, uncontrolled HR (tachycardia)
atrial flutter
(tachycardia) more organized atrial fibrillation (linked to stroke)
supraventricular tachycardia
(palpitations that begin & end rapidly
