cardiovascular (1) Flashcards
4 basic components of any circulatory system
- vehicle
- conduits
- motive force
- exchange areas
What is a vehicle?
substance that carries materials being transported
What is a conduit
channel, pipe or tube thru which the vehicle travels
What is motive force and another name for same?
produces movement (pumps)
What are exchange areas
where materials being transported will be exchanged with a part of the body.
4 major components of the cardiovascular system:
- blood
- blood vessels
- heart
- capillaries
What is the purpose of the human c.v. system
collection of interacting structures designed to supply O2 & nutrients to living cells and remove carbon dioxide and other waste.
Major subdivisions of blood
plasma and formed elements
Describe plasma
55% of total volume
mostly water
protein dissolved in plasma for clotting
serum leftover after clotting
Describe formed elements
45% of blood volume RBCs & WBCs complete cells
platelets - fragments of cells.
What is shape of RBCs
biconcave disc
What is the protein in RBCs and it’s function
hemoglobin; to transport most of the O2 carried by blood
Most common types of WBCs
Neutrophils and lymphocytes
What is the action of neutrophils
phagocytize (eat) foreign particles & organisms
What do lymphocytes do
produce antibodies
