Cardiopulmonary Flashcards
What is an incentive spirometer?
Measures the volume of the breath
Helps the lungs recover after surgery or lung illness
Keeping lungs active and free of fluid
Incentive spirometry
How to use?
Setting up position
The device is at eye level
Inhale slowly and deeply
When cannot breathe more, remove the mouthpiece
Hold the breath for 3-5 seconds
Then slowly exhale
Repeat about 10 times/hour
After 10 times make sure to cough
ABGs

ABGs
If PCO2 is 45?
Acidosis(respiratory)
ABGs
If HCO3 is 21?
Acidosis
Mobilizing secretions
Frequent repositioning
Deep breathing and coughing
Hypoxia
Early sings
Tachypnea
Tachycardiac
Restlessness, Anxiety
confusion
Pale skin
Use of accessory muscle
Hypoxia
late sings
Cyanotic skin
Decrees HR, RR
Lactic acidosis
Nasal cannula
a) Flow rate?
b) Delivers FiO2 of how much?
a) Usually 1-4 Liters (can be up to 6 L/min)
b) FiO2 of 24-44%
Nasal cannula
disadvantage
Skin breakdown
Dry mucosa membrane
Nasal cannula
Nursing action
Access the patency
Ensure the prongs fit
Use WATER solute gel to prevent dry nares
Humidify if 4 L/min or higher
Simple Face Mask
Delivers %?
Oxygen at ?? L/min
Used for short term oxygen therapy
40 - 60%
5-8L/min
Simple Face Mask
nursing actions
Secure seal over the nose and mouth
Make sure the pt wear nasal cannula while eating
Risk for aspiration
CAUTION WITH O2 USE and PATIENT WITH COPD
Why?
Body has adapted to high CO2 level
Oxygen toxicity – caused by over-administration of supplemental O2
Suppression of breathing
Symptoms: Tunnel vision, tinnitus, nausea, confusions, convulsions
Non-rebreather mask
Can deliver??? % oxygen at ??? L/min.
Check to be sure bag is inflated 膨らんだ
Face mask with reservoir bag
60 - 100%
10-15L/min
