CARDIOLOGY - VALVULAR HEART DISEASE Flashcards
What does stenosis means ?
Failure of a valve to open completely obstructing the forward flow
Stenosis will lead to …
pressure overload
What is the causes of acquired valvular stenosis ?
Almost always due to primary leaflet abnormality and virtually always a chronic process
explaination : means that the problem with the valve leaflets is not caused by another underlying condition, such as rheumatic fever or congenital heart disease. Instead, it is caused by wear and tear on the leaflets over time.
What is the most frequent causes of aortic stenosis ?
calcification and sclerosis of the valve
What is the most frequent causes of mitral stenosis?
Rheumatic heart disease
What does regurgitation means / insufficiency /incompetence ?
Failure of valve to close completely
Insufficiency lead to …
Volume overload
What is the most frequent causes of aortic regurgitation ?
Dilation of ascending aorta (sec to hypertension +/- aging)
What is the most frequent causes of mitral regurgitation ?
mitral valve prolapse
