Cardio Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the cardio respiratory system?
Inhale 02 through nose+mouth Down the trachea In to the lungs Into the bronchus then bronchioles Into the capillaries Into the alveoli Gaseous exchange
What is gaseous exchange?
02 and CO2 exchange places in the alveoli in the lungs, 02 goes into the blood, CO2 goes back into the air.
Explain the process of gaseous exchange?
02 passes through alveoli into red blood cells in the capillaries.
02 combines with haemoglobin to form oxyhemoglobin - carried to muscles.
Haemoglobin carries CO2 to capillaries to be exhaled.
All diffusion.
What is a diffusion pathway?
The distance the molecules travel
How are alveoli adapted?
1 cell thick - can happen quick, small barrier
Semi Permeable membrane- CO2 can be exhaled quickly and 02 pass through easily
Large surface area-oxygen can get to the capillaries quicker
What is diffusion?
The movement of substances from a high concentration to low concentration gradient, to reach equilibrium.
What happens to the body during exercise?
Muscles contract
Heart rate increases
Increased blood pressure
Breathing increases
What happens when we inhale?
Intercostal muscles CONTRACT
Diaphragm FLATTENS
Chest EXPANDS-lower pressure
What happens when we exhale?
Intercostal muscles RELAX
Diaphragm turns to DOME SHAPE
Chest DECREASES-pressure increased
