Cardio - Heart Valves Flashcards
What does Heart Valves do?
- allow blood to flow in only one direction through the heart chambers
- it prevents backflow into the atria when the ventricles contract
- open during heart relaxation
- closed when the ventricles contracts
Atrioventricular Valves (AV)
Where is AV loacted?
between atria and ventricles
There are 3 AV valves
what are those?
- Bicuspid Valce
- Tricuspid Valve
- Chordae Tendineae
What AV valve?
- left AV vlave
- between Left atrium and ventricle
- has 2 flaps, or cusps of endocardium
Bicuspid Valve (Mitral Valve)
What AV valve?
- right AV valve;
- has 3 cusps
- between Right atrium and ventricle
Tricuspid Valve
2 Main Heart Valves
- Atriventricular Valves
- Semilunar Valves
There are 2 Semilunar Valves
what are those?
- Pulmonary semilunar valve
- Aoortic semilunar valve
- guards the bases of the 2 large arteries leaving the ventricular chambers
- located at base of blood vessels attached to ventricles
- has 3 cusps that fit tightly together when the valves are closed
- closed during heart relaxation
- forced open when the ventricles contract
Semilunar valves
between R ventricle and pulmonary trunk
Pulmonary semilunar valve
kaya nga pulmonary kasi may pulmonary trunk
between L ventricle and Aorta
Aortic semilunar valve
kaya nga __aort_ic kasi may Aorta
Operation of the AV Valves (1-3/6)
1 - Blood return to atria, puts pressure against AVV; AVV are forced to open
2 - as ventricle fill, AVV cusps hang limply into ventricles
3 - atria contract, forcing additional blood into ventricles
*AVV open; atrial pressure greater than ventricular pressure
Operation of the AV Valves (4/6)
4 - Ventricles contract, forcing blood against AVV cusps.
5 - AVV close
6 - Chordae tendineae tigthen, preventing valve cusps from everting into atria.
*AVV closed; atrial pressure less than ventricular pressure
What AV valve?
- tine white cords that anchor the cusps to the walls of the ventricles
Chordae Tendineae
