Cardio- Bacteria and antibiotics Flashcards
1
Q
Streptococcus viridans- morphology
A
Gram-positive cocci; alpha-hemolytic, NO capsule, Optochin resistant, bile insoluble
2
Q
Streptococcus viridans- presentation
A
- Strep mutans and sanguinis variants are associated with dental caries
- Subacute endocarditis, usually in mitral valve
3
Q
Why does Strep viridans tend to affect the mitral valve?
A
Weak virulence; can only affect previously damaged valves (mitral valve prolapse, rheumatic heart disease, etc.)
4
Q
How does Strep viridans cause endocarditis?
A
Adheres to fibrin-platelet aggregates by creating dextrans from glucose
