Q

Describe how adenosine works?

A

In vascular smooth muscle: adenosine binds to adeonsine type 2a receptors coupled to Gs, this phosphorylates adenylyl cyclase -> increasing cAMP -> inhibits myosin light chain -> smooth muscle relaxation -> decrease in contractile force

In cardiac muscle: activates alpha 1 receptors which are coupled to Gi -> open aCH potassium channels causing hyperpolarisation. Also decreases cAMP
